Fred Yoshitomo Sasaki, born on May 19, 1932 in Los Angeles, CA, died in Chicago, IL on April 26. Fred was the caring husband of Wieslawa Sasaki; loving father of Fred J. Sasaki; stepfather to Miroslaw Czerkas; father-in-law to Jennifer Jaume and Tania Czerkas; doting "Jiji" to August Sasaki, Pearl Sasaki, and Adam Czerkas; affectionate son of the late Yoshitomi and Asako "Mona" Sasaki; brother of John Sasaki; and friend to many.
During World War II, Fred was interned with his family in the Heart Mountain Relocation Center, one of ten internment camps used to imprison Japanese Americans removed from the West Coast. He graduated from Chicago's Lincoln Park High School, after which he was a longtime proprietor, with his mother and brother, of the Barry-Regent Dry Cleaners on Broadway and Wellington. He was known for his exuberant cheer, sweet generosity, and love for his son and grandchildren. He was an avid philatelist, Pac-Man enthusiast, and co-author, with his son, of a series of "How to Fix You" pamphlets.
Visitation will take place at the Buddhist Temple of Chicago, 1151 W. Leland Ave., Chicago, IL 60640, on Sunday, May 19 at 2:00pm, followed by a memorial service at 3:00pm.
