September 9, 1940 – July 24, 2014
Charlie Gibbs passed away peacefully in his sleep on July 24, 2014 surrounded by loved ones who had gathered to celebrate his life with him prior to his passing. Born September 9, 1940, Charlie grew up in Craig, Missouri but made his way to Chicago in the 60’s after military service in the Army. Charlie was a tireless advocate to ending homelessness in Chicago and devoted 20 years to Heartland Health Outreach, where he poured his heart and soul and most waking hours into his work as Supervisor of Medical Records. He was much more than Medical Records, he was the resident interior decorator, social chairman, alumni affairs, smiling face, wise cracking, nickname giving, “Cookie Bitch,” and all around beloved Charlie. To know Charlie is to love Charlie. And he was loved by many whom he considered family and who considered him family. He was an institution... the institution of Charlie.
